What is the give20 web site?

www.give20.org.au is a searchable database of community service positions for high school students in Western Australia. It has been developed by Volunteering WA with funding by the Department of Education and Training. The positions have been collated from an audit of many community organisations across Western Australia.

What kind of organisations are listed on this web site?

The community service positions listed on www.give20.org.au have been collated from an audit of hundreds of community organisations across Western Australia. Most are members of Volunteering WA and/or the Volunteer Resource Centre Alliance. Organisations that are not yet members are clearly identified as non-members.

How does one search for positions?

By postcode: When a postcode is entered give20 will search for positions within the five surrounding postcodes.

By area of interest: The positions are categorised into the following -
Art/Culture
Children & Youth
People with Disabilities
Education
Environment/Conservation
Culturally & Linguistically Diverse People
Health
International / Human Rights
Recreation
Seniors
Sport

By age: Some positions are appropriate for certain age groups only.

By keyword: Searching by keyword may assist in finding specific positions of interest.

Step-by-step position search

Students
1. Search for a position that interests you in your local area. 'Organisation type' indicates the type of work the organisation does. Even though some organisations may fit into many categories, they are only listed under one type. So, when in doubt, click 'All' and you'll get to see more community service positions.

2. Once you decide on a position that most interests you, express interest in that position. If you are keen on more than one position, once you express interest in one position, simply use the "Back" button to go back to your list and express interest in another. You can only express interest in a position if your school is registered with give20. Click here to see which schools are currently listed. If your school is not on the list, please encourage your Community Service Program coordinator to contact Volunteering WA.

3. Once you express interest in a position, an email with your name, year level, position description and organisation contact information will go to your Community Service Program coordinator. If you are unsure of who this is at your school, please ask your Year Coordinator.

4. Let us know how you go! Submit a story on your community service to be posted online. Other students would love to hear how you went!

Teachers
If you would like to explore which community service positions are available in your area, pretend you are a student and follow the instructions above. You will receive an email for each position in which you express interest.

You can only express interest in a position if your school is registered with give20. If you are the Community Service Coordinator and your school is not listed, please click
here to email your school, name and email address to Volunteering WA. We will let you know when you are registered and can use the web site.

Once you are finished expressing interest in a position (or more), check your email inbox and an expression of interest should be there. (Some email systems put the messages in their junk box - your IT people should be able to fix this).

If you know of an organisation that is interested in listing positions on the site, either have them contact us at Volunteering WA, or click here to email Volunteering WA their contact details.

Also, please encourage your students to submit their community service story online!

Privacy information

A student’s personal information will not be kept on the web site. When a student expresses interest in a community service position, an email with the student’s name, year level and position of interest will be sent to their designated Community Service Program Coordinator. Limited agency information will be available to students and parents. Full agency and position information, including contact details, will be made available to the CSP Coordinator. This is to assist agencies in liaising with a smaller number of contacts.

Hints for Community Service Coordinators

Do your research first
It would be a good idea to spend some time looking through different types of positions in your local area, and to express interest in those positions as if you were a student. Then you will receive the full position details by email for almost every position available to your students. You can even start to make contact with those organisations to find out more.

One term at a time
Many organisations only have space for a few community service students at a time. In this case, you may want to encourage certain form groups to do their community service during a particular term. This means you may only have 20 students to manage each term instead of 80. It also means that if an organization has room for 4 students per week, 16 students will be able to serve in those positions, 4 each term.

Hold a give20 session
Instead of having students go onto give20 at home, why not do it as a group at school? You may want to book the computer room, go through the web site as a class, and have students express interest in positions in a supervised environment.

Group likeminded students together

If there is a group of students who have similar interests, perhaps they can form a group and research potential positions together. This would decrease the number of positions you receive in your inbox.
