World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day is commemorated around the globe on 1st December with news and events to highlight progress made in the battle against the epidemic - but at the same time reminding people how much still needs to be done.
International Day of Disabled Persons
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 3 December as the International Day of Disabled Persons to promote understanding about disability issues and to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of disabled persons in every aspect of political, social economic and cultural life. Observance of the Day should also include monitoring of the implementation of recommendations agreed upon by the community of persons with disabilities and others concerned.
International Volunteer Day
In 1985, the United Nations designated 5 December as International Volunteer Day. This day celebrates the efforts of those who have made an important contribution to society by giving their time as volunteers. The United Nations has invited governments and organisations in all countries to undertake and promote activities each year on 5 December to thank the volunteers and to stimulate a greater awareness of their contribution. The day is already marked in more than half the countries of the world.
